April 2003 Diary

Jon - 27 Apr 2003 (Week 23)

Suddenly, out of nowhere, some more snow arrived. After a few days of depressing slush, we woke up on Friday 25th to discover that there'd been 14cm of new snow overnight. Not only that, but the sun was high in the sky and there wasn't a cloud in sight. Dawson and I took the 09:30 bus into the village and went up the Whistler gondola.

Tuesday 22nd was the last day of the season on Blackcomb. Although the mountain is open until April 28th, the snow has already become slushy everywhere except on the glacier, where it's very hard and icy. The experts' terrain park is still a little too daunting and the intermediates' terrain park has vanished, so the only thing to do is ride the slush.

The weather in Whistler has continued to warm up over the last few days and the runs back to the resort are now almost completely mud or grass. The higher temperatures are beginning to affect the upper slopes too, even up to Peak and the West Bowl. Life on the slopes, though, is still good fun - as with last week we've concentrating on jumping.

Spring has definitely arrived in Whistler. The lower slopes are now more mud than snow and the temperature is noticeably warmer in the village. Up in the mountains the situation is very different: there is still some great snow on the higher runs but the emphasis has shifted from powder-hunting to playing around in the mid-mountain, jumping over or dropping off anything which remotely resembles a ramp.

The mountains have been very quiet the last two days. After the awesome conditions on Wednesday the temperature rose on Thursday which may have kept some people away, but the snow high up was still in great condition. Another 10cm of snow on Thursday night helped make Friday one of the most memorable days I've ever had on a snowboard.

After much anticipation, Tuesday 10th turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax. Huge amounts of snow had been forecast, although the temperature was also due to rise. Hoping that the snow would be OK higher up, Matt and I arranged to meet on the 07:00 bus and use up our final Fresh Tracks tickets.

It's been a strange few days since the last diary entry: we've spent most nights having farewell parties and have said goodbye to Andy, Stan, Kinga, Josh and Colette. The days have been spent on the mountain, where the snow on the upper slopes is still in great condition. Up to 70cm of snow is forecast for the next 24 hours so things should get better and better.

We had a fairly relaxed start on Saturday 29th, getting the 09:00 bus into the village to get Dawson to his lesson on time. He was running around panicking about everything, asking how to do his boots up and how to carry a snowboard, but we managed to get him to the bottom of the slopes, where Colette and I left him to the mercy of the snowboard instructor.
